Tips for Net Surfing Beginners |
How to Use "Links" to Surf the Net
A "link" (or hyperlink) on a web page can be clicked on (by using your mouse) to quickly take you to another location on that web page or to a completely different web page. On every page of this web site, any word that is underlined and nearly any image you see is a link. You can click on any link and it will move you (change your view) to another location.
If you point the cursor with your mouse at an image on this web site and wait a second or two, a message will pop up to tell you where the link will take you. Examples of images include the round, blue navigation buttons that you will see below in the next panel. Throughout this web site there are hundreds of images that were carefully selected for each individual link to instantly show you what type of web page it links to.
Using the Back Arrow to Return to the Current Page
Go ahead and try clicking on one of the blue navigation buttons or some underlined text in the panel below. With most web browsers such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer you can return here easily by clicking on the "back" arrow. The "back" arrow is usually found near the upper-left corner of your computer screen and points to the left. After you "go back" to a web page, you can also reverse the direction of your web surfing and "go forward" easily by clicking on the other ("forward") arrow, the one that points to the right.

More Fun, Less Work
As you surf around this web site, you will find quick start menus that help you to quickly find the best Picture Surfing web page for your topic of choice. You can think of these web pages with quick start menus as a smaller web site (for example, a sports web site) within the larger Picture Surfing Web Sites (a family of sites). Most links on our web pages are represented by colorful picture-like icons that instantly convey an idea of what the link leads to even before you read the link description.
Tired of clicking through long lists of links looking for a truly good web site on your topic? On the Picture Surfing Web Sites, we have already done the searching and sorting for you. On our topic-specific sites, we present you with a selective listing of the best sites on your chosen topic. We even scoured the net to find you the highest quality sites that specialize in keeping track of the best web pages on the net. Now, if only visiting the best sites under common topic areas is not enough for your surfing appetite, keep reading to see how we also help you look far and wide on the net.

The Web of Knowledge & A Special Place for Kids
For those of you that like to surf the net to find information, to learn by exploring subjects such as science or the fine arts or otherwise pursue knowledge, we have created a special web site just for you.
We also developed a special web site for kids (or anyone who feels like a kid at the moment) where they can find the best sites for children all together on "their own" web page. If your child is a web-surfing beginner, you may want to help them bookmark this page so they can return to it easily.
There is so much more to see on the Picture Surfing Web Sites that we won't try to explain it all here. We suggest that you just go to the Picture Surfing Web Sites Home Page and try clicking on the picture-like icon links to find out where they take you. Have fun and thanks for visiting!

Help!
We have put a link to our Help Center on every web page on our site. You can find it by looking for the big question mark (?)
on one of the circular buttons on the navigation bar.
The navigation bars are located near the top and bottom of every page, including this page. The Help Center provides assistance for using this web site and features help related to surfing the Internet. However, it also provides access to great sources of help for other (general) computer-related issues. We recommend that you take a look at the Help Center now to familiarize yourself with the resources that are available.
By the way, you can click on the additional navigation bar buttons to quickly access other important places, such as the Picture Surfing Web Sites Home Page.
If you're not sure what one of the buttons does, just point (without clicking) at the button with your cursor (e.g., using your mouse) and a message will pop up and give you the details. Good luck and have fun!
